Who is Chris Snead

  • G. Christopher Snead is the Commercial Business Development Officer for UMB Bank in Lubbock, Texas, where he serves as a key networking and relationship development leader for the bank’s commercial and business banking division. In this role, he is responsible for cultivating strategic partnerships and driving business development initiatives across the region. Prior to joining UMB Bank, Snead spent 27 years as an integral member of the leadership team at the Texas Tech Alumni Association, serving as Vice President of Operations and Engagement. With more than 15 years of senior-level administrative experience, he worked extensively in alumni relations, including leadership roles as Director of Chapter Development, Director of Membership, and Director of Alumni Facilities. During his tenure, he coordinated scholarship and diversity initiatives and oversaw major engagement programs, including the Ring Program, Legacy Program, and Student Alumni Board. He also served as liaison to the athletic department and coordinated game-day operations for the association.

Community Service

  • Throughout his career, Snead has maintained extensive involvement in civic, professional, and community organizations. He is affiliated with organizations including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lubbock Inc., Lubbock Exec, 100 Black Men of West Texas, and Covenant Medical Center, and serves as a voter for the Black College Nines HBCU College Baseball Poll. He is a past president of the Greater Southwest Lubbock Rotary, the South Plains Girls Fast Pitch Softball League, and the South Plains Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials, as well as a past chairman of the Covenant Children’s Hospital Development Board. He is an active member of Lake Ridge Methodist Church.

  • Snead has also served the community through numerous leadership and advisory roles, including the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Community Editorial Board, the Texas Tech Chancellor’s Council, and as a member of the 2003–04 Leadership Lubbock class. Additionally, he served as chair of the Texas Tech Spirit Coordinating Committee, staff sponsor for the Texas Tech Saddle Tramps, and advisor to the Raider Red Committee. 

Honors and Awards

  • His accomplishments and service have been recognized with numerous honors. In 2007, Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock recognized him as one of Lubbock’s Top 20 Professionals Under 40, and in 2016, the Texas Tech Chapter of the National Football Foundation named him Outstanding Official of the Year. In 2022, he was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a distinguished alumnus of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity and J.M. Hanks High School in El Paso, Texas.


  • Snead has also received significant recognition for his contributions to Texas Tech University. In 2019, he was selected as keynote speaker for the Texas Tech University Fall Commencement ceremonies. He received the “Pursuit of Excellence” Award from the Office of Transition and Engagement in 2017 and the “Inclusive Excellence” Award from the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement in 2016. He has additionally been recognized by Texas Tech as both an honorary baseball letter winner and an honorary Saddle Tramp.

Education and Service

  • Snead is a graduate of Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1995. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Incorporated. He is a founding member of both the College Baseball Foundation and the College Baseball Hall of Fame, where he currently serves on the Executive Committee and as Awards Chair. He is also the founder of the Tech Hecklers, a spirit and fundraising organization supporting Texas Tech Baseball.

Officiating

  • Snead is currently in his 36th year as a football official and serves as a crew chief and referee in the Pac-12 Conference. Prior to joining the Pac-12, he spent 12 seasons as a Center Judge in the Southeastern Conference, where he became the first full-time Center Judge in conference history. He also served as a crew chief and referee in Conference USA. His professional football officiating experience includes on-field assignments in the Arena Football League, United Football League, XFL, Alliance of American Football, and the Indoor Football League. In 2011, he was named a finalist for the National Football League and selected for the league’s Wayne Mackie Development Program.


  • His officiating résumé also includes extensive experience at the high school level in football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball, where he earned more than 100 postseason assignments, including two football state championship games, two regional final baseball series, a basketball regional tournament assignment, and selection to officiate a high school baseball all-star game. While in college, he was recognized as an All-American flag football official.


  • Over the course of his career, Snead has officiated more than 200 college football games, including 150 in the Southeastern Conference alone. His postseason assignments include the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Alamo Bowl, and two SEC Championship Games. Professionally, he has worked more than 250 football games, including three league championship games and ten playoff assignments.

Media

  • Chris has an extensive background in media and media relations, having served as the inaugural morning sports radio show host on Double T 104 3 for Ramar Communications. He was the co-host of the top-rated "Morning Drive" from 2009 to 2012.  In 2012, he became more well-known for his daily feature, "Rules of the Game" and adopted the moniker of "The Official Official." Prior to his on-air time at Ramar, he as a regular guest host on the Jack Dale Sportsline Show for ten years.  Chris Snead is the author of the critically acclaimed book The Bleacher Bible, published in 1995, and prior to its publishing, he published over 30 sports-related articles for Red Raider Sports through First Down Publications, the Texas Tech University Daily and other publications.

Personal Life

  • Beyond his professional and civic accomplishments, he became an ordained minister in 2018. He holds master certifications in Artificial Intelligence on the platforms ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Jasper. He is also a Certified Nonprofit Specialist through the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations and Executives and a Certified General Lines Agent through the Texas Department of Insurance. In 2026, he launched the collegiate sports internet brand “Local College Team.”  Chris and his wife, Susan, a 1993 Texas Tech graduate, have been married since 1995. They have three daughters, all of whom graduated from Texas Tech University.
